Hyderabad, June 29: The VII Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge on Thursday convicted four accused persons to 10 years imprisonment in the case pertaining to the attempt to murder MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi.
Those convicted in the case are Hasan Bin Omer Yafai, Abdullah Bin Yonus Yafai, Awad Bin Yonus Yafai and Mohammed Bin Saleh Wahlan. Since they have already served six years in prison, they will serve another four years. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 16,000 on each accused. However, the main accused, Mohammed Pahelwan, who was named as prime accused and conspirator, and nine others have been acquitted by the court.
VII Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge T. Srinivas Rao, who pronounced the judgment, said that the conspiracy angle could not be proved against Mohammed Pahelwan.
Akbaruddin Owaisi was attacked by a group of assailants on April 30, 2011. One of the assailants, Ibrahim Bin Younus Yafai had died after he was hit by a bullet when the gunman of another MIM MLA Ahmed Balala accompanying Akbaruddin Owaisi had opened fire in retaliation.
All the accused were present in court when the judgment was pronounced. They were brought to the court amid tight security. Unprecedented security arrangements were also made at the court complex and except for lawyers and their clients, outsiders, including media were not allowed.
The Central Crime Station, which filed the charge sheet, had named 83 witnesses. In the FIR, the accused were charged under Sections 147 (Rioting), 148 (Rioting with Deadly weapon), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 307 (Attempt to Murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and section 27(1) of Indian Arms Act.
Both parties are now preparing to challenge the decision in the Hyderabad High Court. (INN)
